You build the operators: the agent that answers an enquiry in seconds at eleven at night, the follow-up sequence that does not quietly stop after step two, the reporting that assembles itself before the owner asks for it.
The hard part here is not the model. It is everything around it: what happens when the provider returns a 402, what happens when the agent is confidently wrong in front of a paying customer, and how anybody finds out that it has been failing for ten days.
What it pays
Not commission. Structure differs by engagement and is agreed in writing before you start, and it is the first thing we talk about on a call rather than the last.
What we are looking for
- An agent you shipped that ran unattended, and a clear account of how it failed.
- Opinions about model selection that come from cost and latency, not from a leaderboard.
- Some kind of evaluation harness, even a crude one. Shipping on vibes does not count.
- You instrument things. A silent fallback running for a week is the failure mode you are hired to prevent.
- The judgement to scope an agent to a real workflow and refuse the parts that should stay deterministic code.
- A stomach for this running in front of real customers of real businesses.
Week to week
- Scope which parts of a workflow should be an agent and which should not.
- Build intake, qualification, follow-up and reporting that run without a human watching.
- Choose and route between providers on cost, latency and failure behaviour.
- Build the evaluation and the alerting before the thing goes live.
- Investigate the ones that went wrong, because they will.
